:) :P

Grrrrrrr

I've just opened this email from Carl Pope of the Sierra Club:

Dear Maxxe,

A month ago you signed a petition to Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, telling him that we must act immediately if we want to save the polar bear from future extinction by including it on the Endangered Species List.

Well, 51 days have passed since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service missed its final deadline for deciding whether to include the bear, and this delay has allowed just enough time for oil companies to bid on rights to drill in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea where an estimated one-tenth of the world’s remaining polar bears live. And because there is no proven method for cleaning up oil in the Arctic’s broken sea ice, an oil spill in this area would be catastrophic for the bears.

Last week we sent a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior along with our fellow environmental organizations demanding an investigation into the delay - but the Administration has yet to comment or provide even a reasonable explanation for the setback. That’s why we are asking our Sierra Club members and supporters to donate today and send a message to the Administration that if they are serious about protecting the polar bear, it’s time to include it on the Endangered Species List - right now!

Polar bears would be listed today if it weren’t for powerful special interests fighting the decision at every step. If we don’t act now to get the polar bear onto the Endangered Species List and get serious about combating global warming, America’s polar bears could be gone in our lifetime.

There is simply no time to lose. We need your support to get the polar bear on the endangered species list right now, so that the oil companies will be forced to clear more hurdles before drilling in this sensitive area. Please donate today and help us get the polar bear listed before it's too late.

And we cannot sit back and wait until the ice sheets melt and the last polar bear drowns before we address the devastating impacts that global warming has had on the polar bear. With your support we can provide a future for this magnificent animal - please donate today.

Sincerely,

Carl Pope
Executive Director

P.S. Please help save the polar bear by supporting the Sierra Club, and our work to protect our wildlife and wildlands, keep our air and water clean, and solve global warming.

WHO. Michael Kaye, professor at MY SKEWL!

Be obsessed in the pursuit of the ever-precious piece or lose yourself in creating and become a conduit for passionate making. Michael Ian Kaye is that consummate designer, catalyst and camouflage artist, effortlessly wending his way from book covers to brand identities and beyond. He'll talk about the primacy of process, and why applied design must always act as a counterpoint to self-expression. Most importantly, he'll be frank about the idiosyncrasies and contradictions that allow him to stay in perpetual motion, always moving forward through design.

Michael Ian Kaye has designed books, magazines, identities, advertising, restaurants and a bunch of other stuff. In summer 2007 he started Mother Design, a new venture born out of Mother New York, an advertising agency with offices in London and Buenos Aires. Prior to that he was a senior creative director at AR, an agency with a fashion focus where his clients included Brioni, Brooks Brothers, Salvatore Feragamo and Banana Republic. Kaye was also creative director in Ogilvy & Mather's Brand Integration Group, working with such clients as British Petroleum, Levi's and Motorola. Beyond big brands, his designs have also graced the covers and jackets of hundreds books. He has worked in a senior creative post at Little, Brown & Company, Farrar, Straus, Giroux and Penguin Books. In addition to his design practice, he is an instructor at the School of Visual Arts. His design work has been cited in numerous publications, has received many awards and is included in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

James Jean

James Jean was introduced to me by lost at e minor. The oh so dope illustrator lives out in LA now, but is a big fan of all us artists and east coasters. Here in an interview he goes on to explain his work:

You studied in New York but now live in LA. Why the move and what are the most apparent differences – culturally and creatively - between the two cities?
‘I moved because my wife needed to finish school in LA. Otherwise, I would have stayed in New York, through the hot disgusting summers and the slushy winters. To over generalize, the west coast is less ashamed of craft, of schtick, of kitsch, and of decoration than the east coast. There’s more inherent joy in making art here’.

The sketches on your blog are great. Are they destined to remain as sketches or will some of them burst to life as fully fleshed out paintings?
‘They’ll stay as sketches. Perhaps a few years later, my paintings will grow to incorporate more of these sketch elements’.

Check his blog, its kkkeeeewllll.

the man w my heart..

Grist informs me that factory COWS have to eat bad, bad shit now, worse than before :( --

The government-mandated spike in ethanol production has made corn a pricey luxury for feedlot operators. To cut costs, they're scrambling to substitute scarce corn for abundant distillers grains -- the mush that's left over from corn after the ethanol process.

For every bushel (56 pounds) of corn ethanol makers suck in, they spit out about 18 pounds of distillers grains. And as ethanol production has ramped up -- from 2.1 billion gallons in 2002 to an expected 9 billion gallons this year -- more and more distillers grains have ended up in cattle feed (and, to a lesser extant, in hog and poultry feed).

But like manure in a feedlot packed with corn-fed steers, problems associated with distillers grains as feed are piling up.

greetings from OK

The state of Oklahoma is suing several meat-packing giants, including Tyson and Cargill, for dumping untreated manure into the Illinois River Watershed.
A company lawyer assured the court that Tyson's chicken shit posed no problems for Oklahoma, because "There is nothing more going on in this watershed that's different than the rest of the state [of Arkansas, where they are based]." In Prairie Grove, Ark., citizens are suing poultry owners for elevating local cancer rates to 50 times the national average. The European Union banned arsenicals from poultry production in 1988.

LEAH GORDON on HAITI

GORDON photographs Haitian JACMEL Carnival and VOOOOODOOOOUUU--

Each year, Jacmel, a coastal town in Southern Haiti, holds pre-Lenten Mardi Gras Festivities. Troupes of 'performers' act out mythological and political tales in a whorish theatre of the absurd that courses the streets unshackled by traditional parade.
The characters and costume partially betray their roots in medieval European carnival, but the Jacmellien masquerades are also a fusion of clandestine Vodou, ancestral memory, political satire and personal revelation.
