WHO. Michael Kaye, professor at MY SKEWL!

Be obsessed in the pursuit of the ever-precious piece or lose yourself in creating and become a conduit for passionate making. Michael Ian Kaye is that consummate designer, catalyst and camouflage artist, effortlessly wending his way from book covers to brand identities and beyond. He'll talk about the primacy of process, and why applied design must always act as a counterpoint to self-expression. Most importantly, he'll be frank about the idiosyncrasies and contradictions that allow him to stay in perpetual motion, always moving forward through design.

Michael Ian Kaye has designed books, magazines, identities, advertising, restaurants and a bunch of other stuff. In summer 2007 he started Mother Design, a new venture born out of Mother New York, an advertising agency with offices in London and Buenos Aires. Prior to that he was a senior creative director at AR, an agency with a fashion focus where his clients included Brioni, Brooks Brothers, Salvatore Feragamo and Banana Republic. Kaye was also creative director in Ogilvy & Mather's Brand Integration Group, working with such clients as British Petroleum, Levi's and Motorola. Beyond big brands, his designs have also graced the covers and jackets of hundreds books. He has worked in a senior creative post at Little, Brown & Company, Farrar, Straus, Giroux and Penguin Books. In addition to his design practice, he is an instructor at the School of Visual Arts. His design work has been cited in numerous publications, has received many awards and is included in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
